Shri. Atulprasad Sen

"Atulprasader Gaan" or "Atulprasadio Gaan" refers to the songs of Shri. Atulprasad Sen (Bengali: অতুলপ্রসাদ সেন) (20 October 1871 – 26 August 1934), who was a Bengali composer, lyricist and singer. He is principally remembered as a musician and composer. His songs centered on three broad subjects- patriotism, devotion and love. The sufferings he experienced in his life found their ways into his lyrics; and this has made his songs full of pathos.

He is credited with introducing the Thumri style in Bengali music. He adapted the Hindustani style to fit Bengali songs, without distorting their tune and measure. He added a new dimension to Bengali songs and opened the way for further experiments, using fast-paced Hindustani tunes like kheyal, thungri and dadra skilfully. Although some have criticised his attempt to blend Hindustani tunes with Bengali songs, he has been able to add an element of spontaneity on occasions when the tune has transcended the lyrics. His songs based on thungri and dadra have considerable artistic merit.

Atulprasad's introduction of the raga to Bengali songs has had a significant impact and has influenced the songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam and other raga-based modern songs.
He also pioneered Ghazals in Bengali, composing about 6 or 7 ghazals.
